Traveling with Aunt Flow

Nowadays, they insist you need a ticket or reservation to board a plane or enter all-inclusive resorts. But let's be real, that just isn't true! When Aunt Flow arrives, she's getting in anywhere she pleases, with her entourage in tow: pain, bloating, and messy situations.

Considering the time and money vacations require, when Aunt Flow shows up, we have to make the most of it.

Here are some tips for an amazing vacation, even with her presence:

First, maintain your energy levels:

Preparation is Key: Begin taking multivitamins several days before your trip to boost your energy levels and keep your body nourished.

Stay Hydrated: Ensure you drink plenty of water throughout your journey. Staying hydrated is especially crucial during this time of the month. Adequate hydration helps combat fatigue and bloating, ensuring you feel your best.

Snack Smart: Pack nutritious snacks like nuts or protein bars to sustain energy levels throughout the day.

Rest and Recharge: Avoid over-scheduling activities and prioritize rest. Sufficient sleep and downtime are essential for allowing your body to recharge and combat fatigue effectively.

Next, prioritize your comfort during travel:

Dress Comfortably: Bring along comfortable clothes and shoes that accommodate any bloating or cramping you may experience.

Pain Relief: Pack heating pads or pain relief medication to alleviate discomfort as needed. Make sure to pack these in your carry-on luggage for easy access.

Bathroom Breaks: Familiarize yourself with the availability of bathroom breaks during your journey, including the duration between layovers and the distance between the airport and your resort. This knowledge is vital for avoiding inconvenient and messy situations.

And don't forget your supplies.

Although we are all suckers for nostalgia and memories of better days... in this case, let's be glad we're not living in the age of rotary phones, cassette tapes, and limited options on how to protect ourselves during our cycle!

Pads and tampons are just fine if that's your pleasure.   But there are many other great options that make traveling a bit easier. Do your research beforehand and find the best option for you.

Menstrual Cups: Consider the convenience of menstrual cups, which can be worn for

up to 12 hours at a time. While there may be a learning curve initially, many find them to be a game-changer once mastered.

  • You'll need water access to clean the cup before reinserting it.

  • If you're squeamish, you can wear gloves or do your changes while in the shower. That's a good time to clean it as well.

  •  If you're having a heavier flow day, plan to empty more often than usual.

Period Underwear: Opt for period underwear for freedom and reusability.

  • They come in varying levels of absorbency, so take note.

  • You get what you pay for. While brands like Thinx are more expensive, their absorbency and comfort far outweigh those of cheaper competitors like Hanes and Rdner, where you may experience a feeling of wetness.

  • Showers are a great time to rinse/pre-wash before putting them in the wash.

  • Disposable options are available if that is your preference.

Remember, Aunt Flow is temporary, but the memories from your trip are long lasting. Be prepared, embrace the situation, and enjoy your vacation despite her unwelcome presence.

And whether you choose to invest in reusable period panties or other menstrual management options, know that you can handle Aunt Flow's visit during your vacation. Pack extra supplies, adjust your plans as needed, and take your journey with confidence—let Aunt Flow handle the baggage for once!
